HIV Infection/AIDS
Overview
HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. AIDS stands for Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. HIV is a virus that attacks and disables the immune system. When this occurs, the person can no longer fight off certain infections and cancers. A person can have HIV for many years but have no signs or symptoms or very mild ones. There are specific criteria that must be met for a person to be diagnosed with AIDS.
Transmission
HIV is mainly transmitted through vaginal and anal sex and from mother to infant during gestation, birth or breastfeeding. HIV is difficult to transmit through oral sex but it is possible for this to occur. Also, exposure to blood through sharing injection equipment can transmit HIV. HIV is found in high concentrations in blood, semen, vaginal fluids and breast milk.
Signs & Symptoms
With HIV infection a person may have acute symptoms (fever, malaise, or skin rash) after the first few weeks of HIV infection but before the HIV antibody test would be positive. These flu-like symptoms do not last. A person may also have no signs or symptoms with HIV infection. A person with AIDS may have certain infections, cancers, dementia or severe weight loss, to name some of the conditions associated with AIDS.
Prevention
The regular and correct use of condoms is an excellent way to prevent the sexual transmission of HIV infection. Also, injection equipment should never be shared.
Treatment
There is no cure for HIV or AIDS, only treatment. New antiviral drugs are available to people with HIV or AIDS to help prevent premature morbidity and mortality. A person diagnosed with these conditions should seek regular medical care.
