All Students Are Advised to Get Vaccinated
UC Davis Student Health Services urges all students to receive both the seasonal and H1N1 flu vaccines. Students should be vaccinated as soon as vaccine becomes available to them. When vaccine is available, students may receive vaccination during any routine primary care visit, attend a flu vaccination clinic, or schedule an appointment for vaccination.
H1N1 Flu Vaccination Options
Recent public health recommendations place individuals under age 24 in the top priority group for receiving the H1N1 vaccine. The Yolo County Health Department has delivered a batch of H1N1 vaccine to begin vaccination. Please reference the table at the top of the page for vaccine availability and information about how to get vaccinated.
H1N1 flu vaccine is available as an injectable or intranasal (nasal spray) vaccine. Intranasal vaccine is administered as a quick mist sprayed in each nostril and is an alternative for individuals who do not like needles.
Intranasal H1N1 Vaccine Available (nasal spray/mist)
Due to an overwhelming attendance at the first H1N1 vaccination clinic on Thursday, November 19, Student Health Services is temporarily out of H1N1 intranasal vaccine. The following clinics will be cancelled. SHS is expecting another shipment of vaccine in December and will reschedule clinics at that time. At this time, SHS has set-up a vaccination waitlist system, which helps us to effectively prioritize and manage H1N1 vaccine supplies. Any student may request to be placed on the waitlist regardless of medical history or presence of risk factors; however, priority for injectable vaccine will be given to students who have chronic conditions, are immunocompromised, or are pregnant. To sign-up for the waitlist, please login to Health-e-Messaging and go to the the Appointments page.
Injectable H1N1 Vaccine Waitlist
Student Health Services has received a limited supply of injectable H1N1 influenza vaccine.
Cost of H1N1 Flu Vaccination
H1N1 Flu Shot (Injection) or Intranasal Vaccine:
$10 charge for students regardless of insurance coverage. Fees will be billed directly to a student's campus account.
Seasonal Flu Vaccination Options
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that all students get vaccinated for the seasonal flu. The CDC stresses early seasonal flu vaccination whenever possible, as this may also assist in reducing the severity of H1N1 spread. Seasonal flu vaccine is in short supply. When available, it may be obtained through Student Health Services during any routine primary care visit, attending a flu vaccination clinic, or scheduling an appointment for vaccination. Availability of seasonal flu vaccine may change day by day. Please see above for vaccine availability.
Student Health Services offers both flu shots and intranasal vaccine (also known as FluMist) as options for seasonal flu vaccination. Intranasal vaccine is administered as a quick mist sprayed in each nostril and is an alternative for individuals who do not like needles. Students who are interested can attend a flu vaccination clinic or contact our Appointment Desk (530.752.2349) to schedule an appointment. Students who have questions can contact our Advice Nurse (530.752.9649) to discuss vaccination options. Additional information about vaccination for H1N1 flu will be posted on this site as it becomes available. Availability of vaccine may vary, please see above.
Cost of Seasonal Flu Vaccination
Seasonal Flu Shot (Injection) or FluMist (Intranasal Vaccine):
$20 charge for students regardless of insurance coverage. The costs listed above include visit/clinic fees. All costs are subject to change without notice. Fees will be billed directly to a student's campus account.
Flu and High Risk Conditions
It is especially important for those with chronic conditions to receive both the seasonal and H1N1 flu vaccines this year. Below are some examples of high risk conditions. Students who have questions can contact their health care provider or our Advice Nurse (530.752.9649) if they have questions. Please note that intranasal vaccine is not an option for students with chronic conditions
Flu and Asthma
Influenza is a very serious illness for those with asthma. An analysis by the American Lung Association found that if 100% of people with asthma received a flu shot, close to 136,000 hospitalizations could be prevented each year.
Other High Risk Conditions
Other conditions that place people at high risk for the flu include:
- chronic lung disease such as emphysema, chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis, tuberculosis, or cystic fibrosis
- heart disease
- chronic kidney disease
- diabetes or other chronic metabolic disorder
- severe anemia
- diseases or treatments that depress immunity
