Cervical Cap

Cervical caps are placed over the cervix and prevent sperm from entering the woman's upper reproductive tract. There are two types of cervical caps available in the United States: Lea's Shield and FemCap. Cervical caps are always used in conjunction with spermicide.
- Lea's Chield is an oval device made of silicone with a loop to help with removal. It is a reusable product and is used with spermicide. It is a one size only item. There is a valve present that allows the flow of secretions and air.
- The FemCap is a bowl-shaped cap made from silicone used with spermicide. It is available in 3 sizes requiring a fitting by a clinician. The FemCap can be worn up to 48 hours.
Advantages
- Contains no hormones
- Immediately effective
- Used only when needed
Disadvantages
- Spermicidal cream or jelly may cause irritation
- No protection from STIs
- Less effective than other types of contraception

- Failure Rate (if never given birth): Typical use: 14%
- Failure Rate (prior pregnancy): Typical use: 29%
