Information for New Students
School of Veterinary Medicine:
Medical Entrance Requirements - Class of 2015

For your health and safety and for the safety of your colleagues and patients, the following vaccinations and screening procedures are required upon admission to the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine.

Student Health and Counseling Services must receive all documentation by August 1, 2011. Those who fail to meet clearance prior to entry or upon arrival to campus are subject to holds on enrollment, classroom activity, and/or financial aid as determined by the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, Dean's Office.

Testing and Immunization can be very costly. We recommend that you obtain these through your current primary care or health organization, rather than wait to obtain them on campus or in the Davis community. However, persons unable to obtain adequate immunization or screening documentation may receive necessary testing or vaccination at Student Health and Counseling Services during summer or upon arrival to campus. All services are on a fee-for-service basis at student rates.

To help you complete the requirements, a Medical Entrance Requirements Checklist (pdf) is available for download. Additional information is provided below:

Mandatory Immunizations & Records (required)

All mandatory items must be submitted to receive medical clearance:

Medical records documentation of tuberculosis screening by PPD testing:

Submit a copy of the test, with the date and location/provider stamped or signed by an authorized health care agent indicating:

  • a negative result performed after March 2011 OR
  • a positive result performed any time in the USA with a chest x-ray performed after September 2009 demonstrating absence of active disease

Persons who have completed INH prophylaxis are encouraged to provide documentation of completed treatment for their medical files.

Medical Records documentation for Tetanus/Diptheria

Submit a copy of vaccination records with the date and location/provider stamped or signed by an authorized health care agency indicating receipt of one shot received after September 2001. In addition, the California Department of Public Health recommends an adult pertussis booster vaccination. Medical Records documentation for Rabies (three options):

  • Submit a copy of vaccination records with the date and location/provider stamped or signed by an authorized health care agent indicating receipt of 3 shots by pre-exposure protocol (day 0, 7, 28) received after September 2009.

  • Submit a copy of medical records with the date and location/provider stamped or signed by an authorized health care agent indicating significant antibody titer by RFFIT testing performed after September 2009. Results greater than 1:5 or greater than 0.1 IU/mL is considered acceptable Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC/ACIP) guidelines.
    OR
  • Receive a series of three rabies vaccinations at special clinics held at Student Health and Counseling Services. Since rabies vaccination is hard for some students to obtain prior to coming to UC Davis, the entrance requirement for rabies can be completed at Student Health and Counseling Services after the September 1 deadline. The vaccination clinic dates will be coordinated with the Vet School and Vet School will incorporate release time into academic schedules.

Rabies Clinic at Student Health and Counseling Services

You must attend all three clinics to receive the full vaccination series. The Vet School will assign students a section number for the first injection according to your class schedule. No appointment is necessary for your first injection - just show up. You will sign-up for the time of your subsequent injections at your first visit. Wait times may vary to receive the injection and you must wait 30 minutes after injection. Consider bringing a book or something to work on. If you have a laptop or wireless device, wireless connections are available in the waiting areas through UC Davis Moobilenet.
