Information for New Students
Meningococcal Meningitis Vaccination Recommendations
The UC Davis Student Health Program joins the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) in recommending routine vaccination for college freshman living in dormitories. Immunization is recommended because of a documented increased risk of meningococcal disease in this group. The meningitis risk for other groups of students (non-freshman) is similar to the general population and those who wish to reduce their risk for meningococcal disease may elect to receive the vaccine however are not uniquely recommended to do so.
We recommend that students try to receive vaccine through their local healthcare provider or public health department prior to coming to campus, however, this vaccine is available at Student Health Services (SHS) for a fee. Students interested in vaccination at SHS can sign-up for one of the Fall quarter vaccination clinics (see below) or schedule an appointment for vaccination with our nursing staff.
Cost of Vaccination
The cost for the meningitis vaccination is:
- $61 for students with SHIP insurance (cost reflects a SHIP benefit/discount on injectibles)
- $106 for students with private insurance
The costs listed above include an office visit/clinic fee. All costs are subject to change without notice. Charges will be billed directly to the student's campus account.
Meningitis Vaccination Clinics - Fall 2008
Student Health Services will hold several vaccination clinics at the several residence hall areas in partnership with Student Housing this Fall and also hold a clinic at Cowell Student Health Ceneter. Students who were not able to attend a special clinic can call to schedule an appointment. The cost of vaccination is available above.
