Student Health Insurance Plan
SHIP Pharmacy Benefits
(Academic Year: Fall 2007 - Summer 2008)

The Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) provides pharmacy coverage at the Student Health Services pharmacy located at Cowell Student Health Center, as well as off-campus retail pharmacies.

At Student Health Services/Cowell Student Health Center

$15 copay for generics and a $20 copay for brand name.

At All Other Pharmacies

50% of “covered expense”. You pay for the prescription and file a claim with Blue Cross for 50% reimbursement (claim forms and instructions are available on the web at http://healthcenter.ucdavis.edu). “Covered expense” is the amount that Blue Cross considers to be the “usual and customary” charge for a prescription. If your pharmacy charges more than the “usual and customary” amount for your prescription, the reimbursement that you receive from Blue Cross will be less than 50% of the actual charge.

Annual Calendar Year Maximum Benefit: $3000

Blue Cross will pay a maximum of $3000 in pharmacy benefits for all SHIP students between January 1 and December 31. Regardless of how much benefit you receive in a calendar year, you will begin again on January 1 of the new calendar year with a new $3000 annual maximum benefit for the new calendar year.

For special-order medications that require a large minimum order amount, talk with the pharmacist.

Injectables at SHS

You receive a 50% discount at Student Health Services on most injectables. This does not count toward your annual calendar year maximum benefit for pharmacy.

Traveling or Studying Abroad

Before you leave for a trip or education abroad, you may purchase medications for the remainder of the current quarter. If there are three months remaining in the quarter, you may purchase up to three months worth of medication at one time. If there are two months remaining in the quarter, you may purchase up to two months worth of medication. Please remember that you will be charged one copay for each month of medication that you purchase.

You may purchase prescriptions for an upcoming quarter after your UCDavis registration fees and SHIP fee have been paid for that quarter. If you are a SHIP member during the spring quarter, you may purchase your summer supply of medications at the end of April.

If you are planning to participate in an education abroad program, take into consideration what your medication needs will be and make advance arrangements accordingly. We strongly recommend for you to make arrangements well in advance of your departure date. Pharmacists are available for consultation.
