Health Education & Promotion
Student Positions

Overview 2010-2011

Health Education and Promotion (HEP) is currently recruiting nine paid student assistants, one paid volunteer coordinator and up to 16 unpaid volunteers for the 2010-2011 academic year. Professional staff, Student Assistants and Volunteers focus on issues related to nutrition, physical activity, sexual health, wellness, stress management, alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. Please note application deadlines for each position:

All applications for the student assistant and volunteer coordinator positions must be submitted to Health Education and Promotion in the Cowell Student Health Center Annex by 4:00 p.m. on the application deadline. All application for the volunteer positions must be submitted to Health Education and Promotion in the new Student Health and Wellness Center building by 4:00 p.m. on the application deadline. (Please note - if you wish to turn in your application for the volunteer position prior to the start of Spring quarter, go to the Health Education and Promotion department located in the Cowell Annex.)

Student Assistants (paid)

There are nine paid student assistant positions ($8.75 per hour). Student assistants work 10 hours per week when school is in session. Three positions are available in each of the three topic areas:

  • Alcohol, tobacco and other drug issues
  • Sexual health
  • Wellness – Each wellness student assistant will specialize in one of the following areas:
    • Nutrition
    • Physical Activity
    • Stress

Position Duties

Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug (ATOD) Student Assistants

The Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug (ATOD) Issues Student Assistants will be responsible for assisting with projects that promote and advocate for alcohol risk reduction, drug abuse prevention and treatment; empower students to make safer choices; and communicate negative consequences of high risk drug and alcohol use.  ATOD Student Assistants will implement the environmental action and social marketing projects designed by the professional staff, including conducting environmental scans, distributing surveys, and developing strategies to change policies and environments.  Student assistants will participate in campus and community coalitions related to alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.  The positions involve developing content for the Safe Party website (http://safeparty.ucdavis.edu).  General duties will include reporting program statistics and completing other administrative duties.  ATOD student assistants will also be responsible for designing and implementing ATOD programs in residence halls, for classes, for student organizations and in other settings. In addition student assistants will work collaboratively on two to three special events per year and help design publicity materials. Background, job or academic experience and/or interest in alcohol and other drug risk reduction, responsible hosting, or related issues preferred.

Sexual Health Student Assistants

The Sexual Health Student Assistants will be responsible for assisting with projects that promote and advocate for sexual health issues, including prevention of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including HIV; increased screening for STIs including HIV; and reduction in unwanted pregnancies among UC Davis students. Sexual Health Student Assistants will oversee environmental action and social marketing projects, including conducting environmental scans and developing strategies and interventions to promote condom usage among UC Davis students. In addition, the Sexual Health Student Assistants will be responsible for designing and implementing sexual health programs in residence halls, for classes, at student organization meetings and other settings. Sexual Health Student Assistants will plan, oversee and coordinate special events relating to sexual health and will be responsible for creating publicity materials with the marketing department. General duties will include reporting program statistics and completing other administrative duties. Background, job or academic experience and/or interest in prevention of sexually transmitted diseases including HIV, contraception and/or sexuality or related issues preferred.

Wellness Student Assistants

The Wellness Student Assistants will specialize in one of three content-specific areas: nutrition, physical activity or stress. Each student assistant will work on projects related to their specific content area. Examples of projects include: working with campus partners to improve the nutrition environment on campus, developing strategies to increase physical activity among students who do not engage in any physical activity, and expanding stress reduction efforts. All student assistants will assess the campus environment through conducting environmental scans and identify ways to make the campus environment more conducive to wellness. The student assistants will work together to coordinate special events relating to wellness and will be responsible for designing publicity materials with the marketing department. The student assistants will also be responsible for conducting program planning and implementing wellness programs in residence halls, for classes and in other settings. General duties will include writing reports, reporting program statistics and completing other administrative duties. Background, job or academic experience and/or interest in nutrition, physical activity, stress management, sleep and/or related issues preferred.

We are seeking students with the following skills, knowledge and abilities:

  • Interest in public policy, media advocacy, marketing and/or changing environments related to healthy behaviors
  • Creative, organized and detail-oriented
  • Strong public speaking and interpersonal communication skills to work and communicate effectively with diverse group of University students, faculty, staff and community members
  • Strong writing skills required
  • Strong research skills
  • Ability to assist in the development, implementation and evaluation of health promotion efforts
  • Ability to gather, enter and/or analyze data
  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team
  • Ability to manage projects in a timely fashion
  • Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office applications
  • Prefer students with job, volunteer and/or academic experience in topic area (e.g., nutrition, physical fitness, stress management, sleep, wellness, alcohol risk reduction, tobacco control, prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, sexual health or contraception)
  • Prefer students who have participated in other campus organizations (e.g., Greeks, ASUCD, California Aggie, Campus Recreation)
  • Prefer upper-division status

Volunteer Coordinator (paid)

There is one paid position ($9 per hour).  The Volunteer Coordinator works 10 hours per week when school is in session. The Volunteer Coordinator will manage student volunteers responsible for completing tasks related to three topic areas:

  • Alcohol, tobacco and other drug issues
  • Sexual health
  • Wellness

Position Duties

Volunteer Coordinator

The Volunteer Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating student volunteer tasks that address alcohol, tobacco, other drugs, sexual health and wellness issues.  The Volunteer Coordinator will be responsible for supervising up to 16 peer health education volunteers.  The volunteers provide education on a variety of health topics that affect college students and assess the campus environment related to health and wellness.  The Volunteer Coordinator will communicate with Health Educators and Student Assistants to identify tasks for the volunteers, attend weekly staff meetings (1 hour), facilitate weekly volunteer meetings (1 hour), distribute tasks among the volunteer team, create a schedule of tasks and provide supervision to ensure task completion. The volunteer coordinator will arrange for training on specific tasks as needed and conduct other administrative duties.

We are seeking a student with the following skills, knowledge and abilities:

  • Strong management skills required
  • Organized and detail-oriented
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills to work and communicate effectively with diverse group of student volunteers and professional staff
  • Strong writing skills required
  • Ability to assist in the implementation of project tasks
  • Ability to gather and enter program statistics
  • Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office applications
  • Must be in good academic standing
  • Prefer students with job or volunteer experience in coordination of tasks
  • Prefer students who have participated in other campus organizations (e.g., Greeks, ASUCD, California Aggie, Campus Recreation)
  • Prefer upper-division status
  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team
  • Ability to manage projects in a timely fashion
  • Willingness to learn about alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, sexual health and wellness related issues preferred.

Volunteers (unpaid)

There are up to 16 unpaid positions. The volunteers will work approximately 4 hours per week while school is in session. We are looking for volunteers who are interested in assisting HEP to change the campus environment to promote health and wellness. Please refer to the application for more detail on the application process, training requirements and position requirements.

Position Duties

The Volunteers will staff HEP tables at special events such as The Buzz, World AIDS Day, and the Wellness Carnival; participate in outreach activities; distribute HEP marketing materials throughout various campus channels; collect and gather information (e.g. conduct environmental scans, assessments and surveys); and stock and staff the “Love Lab” (a cart taken to various campus locations to distribute free condoms & other safe sex products and materials).
