Student Positions

Overview 2012-2013

Health Education and Promotion (HEP) is recruiting nine Student Assistants, a Volunteer Coordinator and up to 16 unpaid volunteers for the 2012-2013 academic year. Professional staff, Student Staff and Volunteers focus on issues related to nutrition, physical activity, sexual health, wellness, stress management, and alcohol, tobacco and other drugs issues. Please note application deadlines for each position:

All applications and resumes for the student assistant and volunteers positions must be submitted to the Health Education and Promotion Department located on the third floor in the Student Health & Wellness Center by 4:00 p.m. on the application deadline.

Student Assistants (paid)

Health Education and Promotion (HEP) is currently recruiting nine student assistants for the 2012-2013 academic year. These are paid positions ($8.75 per hour). Student Assistants work 8 – 12 hours per week (average 10) when school is in session. Positions are available in each of the following topic areas:

  • Alcohol, tobacco and other drug issues
  • Sexual health
  • Wellness Garden/Nutrition
  • Physical Activity
  • Stress, Sleep and Mental Health

Position Duties

The Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug (ATOD) Student Assistants will be responsible for assisting with projects that promote and advocate for alcohol risk reduction, empower students to make safer choices when using alcohol and communicate the negative consequences of high risk alcohol and drug use. ATOD Student Assistants will implement the environmental action and social marketing projects designed by the professional staff, including conducting environmental scans, distributing surveys and developing and maintaining strategies to change policies and environments. Student Assistants will participate in campus and community coalitions related to alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. The positions involve developing content for the Safe Party website (http://safeparty.ucdavis.edu) and for laying the groundwork to transition UC Davis in becoming a smoke-free campus by 2014. General duties will include reporting program statistics and completing other administrative duties. ATOD Student Assistants will also be responsible for designing and implementing ATOD programs in residence halls, classes, student organization meetings, and other settings. In addition Student Assistants will work collaboratively on two to three special events per year and help design publicity materials. Background, job or academic experience and/or interest in alcohol, tobacco, and other drug risk reduction, responsible hosting, or related issues preferred.

The Sexual Health Student Assistants will be responsible for assisting with projects that promote and advocate for sexual health issues, including prevention of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), increased screening for HIV and other STIs and reduction in unwanted pregnancies among UC Davis students. Sexual Health Student Assistants will oversee environmental action and social marketing projects, including conducting environmental scans and developing strategies and interventions to promote condom usage among sexually active UC Davis students. In addition, the Sexual Health Student Assistants will be responsible for designing and implementing sexual health programs in residence halls, classes, student organization meetings and other settings. Sexual Health Student Assistants will plan, oversee and coordinate special events related to sexual health and communication, manage the Love Lab (condom access project), and help design publicity with the marketing department. General duties will include reporting program statistics and completing other administrative duties. Background, job or academic experience and/or interest in prevention of sexually transmitted diseases including HIV, contraception and/or sexuality or related issues preferred.

The Wellness Student Assistants will generally specialize in one of three content-specific areas: nutrition (including managing the Wellness Garden and assisting with the UC Davis Farmers Market), physical activity or stress, sleep, and mental health issues. Each Student Assistant will work on projects related to their specific content area. Examples of projects include: working with campus partners to improve the nutrition environment on campus, developing strategies to increase physical activity among students who do not engage in any physical activity, and promotion of healthy sleep and napping efforts. All Student Assistants will assess the campus environment through conducting environmental scans and identifying ways to make the campus environment more conducive to wellness for their respective content areas. Student Assistants will coordinate special events and will be responsible for designing publicity materials with the marketing department. Student Assistants will also be responsible for conducting and implementing wellness-related programs in residence halls, classes, student organization meetings and other settings. General duties will include writing reports, reporting program statistics and completing other administrative duties. Background, job or academic experience and/or interest in nutrition, physical activity, sleep and/or mental health related issues preferred.

We are seeking students with the following skills, knowledge and abilities:

  • Interest in public policy, media advocacy, media relations, marketing and/or changing environments related to healthy behaviors
  • Creative, organized and detail-oriented
  • Strong writing skills required
  • Strong public speaking and interpersonal communication skills to work and communicate effectively with diverse groups of University students, faculty, staff and community members
  • Strong research skills
  • Ability to assist in the development, implementation and evaluation of health promotion efforts
  • Ability to gather, enter and/or analyze data
  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team
  • Ability to manage projects in a timely fashion
  • Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office applications
  • Must be in satisfactory academic standing
  • Prefer students with job, volunteer and/or academic experience in topic area (e.g., nutrition, physical activity, sleep, wellness, alcohol risk reduction, tobacco control, prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, sexual health, sexuality and/or contraception)
  • Prefer students who have participated in other campus organizations (e.g., Greeks, ASUCD, California Aggie, Campus Recreation)
  • Prefer upper-division status

Medical Clearance Requirement

Since this position is at a health facility, all employees participate in required preventive medical and monitoring programs, which includes a blood test and TB screening and may also include immunizations. These screenings are provided to meet Federal, State and University requirements.

Volunteer Coordinator (paid)

Health Education and Promotion (HEP) is currently recruiting a Volunteer Coordinator for the 2012-2013 academic year. This is a paid position ($9 per hour). The Volunteer Coordinator works 8 – 12 hours per week (average 10) when school is in session. The Volunteer Coordinator will manage student volunteers responsible for completing tasks related to three topic areas:

  • Alcohol, tobacco and other drug issues
  • Sexual health
  • Wellness (physical activity, nutrition, stress and mental health and sleep)

Position Duties

The Volunteer Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating student volunteer tasks that address alcohol, tobacco, other drugs, sexual health and wellness issues. The Volunteer Coordinator will be responsible for supervising up to 16 peer health education volunteers. The volunteers provide assistance on a variety of health topics that affect college students and help change the campus environment to promote health and wellness. The Volunteer Coordinator will communicate with Health Educators and Student Assistants to identify tasks for the volunteers, attend weekly staff meetings (1 hour per week), facilitate weekly volunteer meetings (1 hour per week), distribute tasks among the volunteer team, create a schedule of tasks and provide supervision and evaluation to ensure task completion. The Volunteer Coordinator will arrange for training on specific tasks as needed and conduct other administrative duties.

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills to work and communicate effectively with a diverse group of student volunteers and professional staff
  • Ability to assist in the implementation of project tasks
  • Strong writing skills required
  • Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office applications
  • Must be in satisfactory academic standing
  • Prefer students with job or volunteer experience in coordination of tasks
  • Prefer students who have participated in other campus organizations (e.g., Greeks, ASUCD, California Aggie, Campus Recreation)
  • Prefer upper-division status
  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team
  • Ability to manage projects in a timely fashion
  • Willingness to learn about alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, sexual health and wellness related issues preferred.

Volunteers (unpaid)

There are up to 16 unpaid positions. The volunteers will work approximately 4 hours per week while school is in session. We are looking for volunteers who are interested in assisting HEP to change the campus environment to promote health and wellness. Please refer to the application for more detail on the application process, training requirements and position requirements.

Position Duties

The Volunteers will staff HEP tables at special events such as The Buzz, UC Davis Farmers Market, and the Wellness Carnival; participate in outreach activities; distribute HEP marketing materials through various campus channels; collect and gather information (e.g. conduct environmental scans, assessments and surveys); and stock and staff the Love Lab (a cart taken to various campus locations to distribute free condoms & other safer sex products and materials).
