Health Education & Promotion
Internship Opportunies

The 2008-2009 internship application deadline was Friday, April 18, 2008.

Health Education and Promotion offers education and resources, provides outreach programs, conducts marketing and implements environmental change for students. We have internships that are open to all UCD students. Educate yourself and your peers on a variety of health topics that affect college students and change the campus environment to promote wellness. Interns will focus on one of three topic areas:

  • Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs
    • High risk drinking prevention
    • Other drug issues
    • Safer party hosting and responsible beverage services
    • Tobacco prevention
  • Sexual Health
    • Safer sex
    • Birth control
    • Prevention of sexually transmitted infections (STI), including HIV
    • Condom availability and usage
    • STI screening
  • Wellness
    • Importance of physical activity and healthy eating
    • Sleep
    • Stress management
    • Mind/body balance
    • Emotional health

As an intern you will:

  • Become knowledgeable in your team’s content area;
  • Conduct public health outreach, facilitate presentations, help develop marketing materials and advocate for changes to the campus/community environment;
  • Develop skills in presenting to small and large groups;
  • Familiarize yourself with services available through Student Health Services as well as other campus and community resources.

A former intern says: “Working as an intern for Health Education and Promotion (HEP) has given me the skills and unique experiences that employers and graduate admissions have found to be valuable. Not only have I learned about public health and other aspects of health care and education, but also I have acquired important leadership and team building skills. I had not idea how much I would gain from working with HEP when I started. In addition to the guidance from supervisors/coordinators and close relationships I built with fellow interns, opportunities in health care employment and graduate study have opened up to me that I otherwise may not have been able to take advantage of had it not been for this internship.” -Christina Pingol, HEP intern, 2006-2007

The Application Process

This is a competitive application and interview process. The interview consists of two parts: group and individual interviews. Applications were due Friday, April 18th by 4:00 pm. The earlier you turn in your application, the more likely you will be to get your first choice interview date. All applicants will receive notification via mail and e-mail at the addresses provided on the application.

Internship Requirements

HEP requires a three-quarter commitment in addition to a week of training. All internships begin in Fall and continue through Spring. You must be a current student during all three quarters.

Fall Quarter through Spring Quarter

The following is a list of the minimum responsibilities to meet the internship requirements (approximately 4-6 hours/week). Interns are encouraged to take the initiative in performing beyond the minimum requirements.

  • Attend weekly continuing education and planning meetings (Wednesdays, 6-8 pm).
  • Complete a minimum of 50 project hours per quarter (including Wednesday night meetings). These hours may include tasks such as attending campus and/or community meetings, developing marketing materials, conducting educational presentations, conducting environmental assessments, participating in special events, conducting focus groups and preparing press releases or writing letters to the editor.

Note: Transcript notation may be received with satisfactory completion of quarterly internship requirements. EPP 198 units may be earned for a special project that is above and beyond the basic internship requirements.
