Health Education & Promotion
Enhancing and maintaining wellness is vital for the successful pursuit of your goals at UC Davis and for the rest of your life. Health Education and Promotion (HEP) is a primary resource to help you achieve wellness through student-centered education and creating health-promoting environments. Professional staff and student staff and volunteers focus on issues related to nutrition, physical activity, sexual health, wellness, stress management, alcohol, tobacco and other drugs issues.
Program Focus
Health Education and Promotion uses the Spectrum of Prevention as a framework to identify and develop multidimensional approaches for effective prevention efforts. This approach helps practitioners implement strategies that work on multiple levels to create a synergy of effort to optimize desirable health behaviors. The Spectrum identifies six levels of intervention that include not only strengthening individual knowledge and skills and promoting community education, but also educating providers, fostering coalitions and networks, changing organizational practices and influencing policy. Larry Cohen originally developed the Spectrum while working at the Contra Costa County Health Department and this model is based on the work of Marshall Swift. More information about the Spectrum of Prevention can be found on the Prevention Institute's website. Click here to read examples of HEP projects and where they fit within the levels of the Spectrum of Prevention.
Health Education and Promotion has developed a three year strategic plan to direct the department's efforts in promoting a healthy campus community.
